Help is at hand in the shape of the Roho® Merlin ™, the Roho® Merlin™ is a proximity sensor which precisely and continually monitors the inflation level of the Roho® cushion and alerting the user to any changes, keeping you and your client worry free and ensuring that the cushion is providing the optimum relief that it was designed for!
The Roho® Merlin™ is available in four different sizes to fit cushion sizes from 7x7cells through to 12x12cells.

PRODUCT FOCUS
CILTECH™ SHEET AND GEL – THE SILICONE SOLUTION TO SCARRING
Sumed is now able to provide the healthcare professional with a single, simple source for silicone scar treatment, by offering a comprehensive sheet and gel range from Ciltech™
Offering substantial cost savings, Ciltech™ Anti-Scar Gel and Ciltech™ Anti-Scar Elastomer Sheet provide the ideal solution for flattening, smoothing and reducing the discolouration associated with keloid or hypertrophic scars following surgery, burns or other traumatic wounds.
Hypertrophic and keloid scars have been successfully diminished by either silicone sheet or silicone gel treatment since the 1980s and it is believed that silicone treatment delivers partial occlusion and rehydration of the skin, leading to a reduction of scar size and prominence.
The Ciltech™ range comprises :-
Ciltech™ Anti-Scar Gel
Available in 15g or 60g packs and comprises a self-drying silicone based product which, when applied as a thin layer, will dry within about 5 minutes to form a transparent semi-occlusive film.
Ciltech™ Anti-Scar Elastomer Sheet
Available in 10cm x 20cm, 15cm x 15cm and 10cm x 10cm sheets, which can be cut to size – a self-adhesive conformable silicone sheet backed by a semi-permeable polyurethane film.
The Ciltech™ products have been available on drug tariff since November 2008 and are rapidly gaining widespread usage within Burns and Plastics departments as well as Hand therapy units.

CASE STUDY PREPARED ON ROHO™ DRY FLOTATION TECHNOLOGY RANGE OF PRODUCTS AVAILABLE FROM SUMED
Jackie Stephen-Haynes, the eminent Consultant Nurse and Senior Lecturer in Tissue Viability for Worcestershire PCT and University of Worcester recently completed a case study on the implications for Clinical Practise when using Roho™ Dry flotation technology.
The paper covers the causes of pressure damage and the cost of treatment which is estimated at £1.4 to £2.1 billion every year which equates to a massive 4% of total NHS annual expenditure. (Bennett et al, 2004)
The prevention of pressure ulceration requires a multi-factor approach which includes risk assessment, re-positioning, nutritional assessment/management, continence management and the use of pressure relieving equipment. However it is important to note that pressure ulcers are considered to be largely preventable.
ROHO™ product range showcased at ‘Wounds’ 09
Risk assessment and the provision of suitable pressure relieving equipment are the two essential components in preventing pressure damage.
There are a multitude of different equipment approaches which can appear be daunting to the clinician. Roho™ products offer unique solutions that can help with positioning, comfort and pressure reduction and range from a toilet seat cushion, recliner cushion, sacral support cushion through to Roho™ heel boots, to offer focused protection and promote wound heeling.
A significant part of the study also concentrates on the Roho™ Mattress range and the benefits they can offer to the user.
Ms Stephen-Haynes article is substantiated by evidence based research which is well documented within her case study.

The Posifect® Bio-electric Wound Dressing comes to the UK
The revolutionary POSiFECT® bio-electric dressing moves Sumed into an exciting new area of wound care – therapy for the long-term non-healing wound.
Produced by Biofisica, the leading manufacturer of bio-current wound healing technology, the POSiFECT® dressing range is now exclusively distributed and supported throughout the UK by Sumed International (UK) Ltd.
The POSiFECT® wound dressing produces small bio-electric currents around the site of a wound to mimic natural bio-electric currents which can help non- healing wounds to begin the normal healing process.
Biofisica’s president commented “The strength of Sumed’s team and reputation will allow us to expand…into the UK market and ensure that this ground breaking technology is available to patients via the public healthcare system.”
Non-healing wounds are extremely common and include pressure sores, leg ulcers and post-operative or post-trauma wounds – it is estimated that non-healing wound management costs the NHS some 4% of its total annual budget.
This exciting new technology is a logical progression for Sumed and takes full advantage of our existing expertise in wound care.

Scientists harness nature's sea healers
Monday 25 February 2008
Scientists at the University of Bolton are using seaweed and crab shell extracts to create an innovative medical textile with unique properties to aid and accelerate healing.
This new material, called Chitocel, is now set to be developed as a revolutionary wound dressing. Infused with natural healing and antibacterial properties, this dressing will be able to absorb moisture, help stop bleeding and be hypoallergenic. It will also be better for the environment, its natural products ingredients make it completely biodegradable.
International patents have been filed and the material's commercial future will be developed with North West medical dressings company Sumed (International) UK Ltd. The work was made possible as a result of support Sumed received from SEEDA (the South East of England Development Agency).
Leading the four-year research project at the University of Bolton is Dr Mohsen Miraftab who has worked in the field of wound dressing development within the university's Centre for Materials Research and Innovation (CMRI) for the past eight years.
Pictured with Dr Miraftab is Graham Collyer, the Executive Chairman of Sumed (International) UK Ltd, in the CMRI textiles labs at the University
Said Dr Miraftab:
'We began by looking at alginate, extracted from a type of seaweed which has excellent liquid absorption properties. This is very important in wound dressings as the body produces its own natural defence to wounds, for example plasma, which needs to be absorbed and held away from the skin.'
'We were also looking for healing qualities and it is Chitosan, extracted from crab shell, which provides all the healing and antibacterial merits of this new material. In stories of ancient China, in battles, there are tales of crabs being smashed open and thrust into wounds. There is logic in this; Chitosan is antimicrobial and accelerates cell activity. In effect it heals and kills bacteria but, of course, it can't absorb water – being the crab's shell it is actually designed to do the opposite.'
Dr Miraftab's team have found a way to fuse together the molecules of alginate and Chitosan, creating a new molecule. Their patented technique uses hydrolysis and wet extrusion processes to create a new fibre which is infused with all the natural properties of its raw ingredients and yet strong enough to be made into a dressing.
Said Dr Miraftab:
'We are not the first team to look at alginate and Chitosan, but we are the first to successfully create a combined fibre strong enough to be made into a wound dressing.'
Now, working together with Sumed (International) UK Ltd, the team has developed the fibre from the initial university prototype to create a 10cm-square wound dressing.
Said Graham Collyer, the Executive Chairman of Sumed (International) UK Ltd:
'There is still more testing to do on Chitocel but all the indicators are that we do have something new.
'Pre-clinical safety trials are currently being carried out and further funding for commercialisation is being sought.'
